Universally wanted, but still not going to happen for obvious reasons.
Back when Sony had that major mess up with their emails and pretty much everything under the sun was leaked, some good and some terribly bad, one thing came out of those emails that caught everyone's attention, Idris Elba playing James Bond. What was more surprising was that when the news leaked, about 97% of the internet was agreement with Sony. Pretty much everyone wants to see this happen, because when you think of Bond, you think of a smooth, savvy, cold heart having Brit, and that's what Idris Elba embodies on a daily basis. But of course there are people that don't agree with this move, the message boards are lighting up with reasons why 007 should remain white. More notably, and arguably the greatest Bond, behind Sean Connery in my book, Roger Moore shared his opinions in an interview with Paris Match:
"Although James
may have been played by a Scot, a Welshman and an Irishman,
I think he should be 'English-English'.
Nevertheless, it's an interesting idea, but unrealistic."

Sigh, stuff like this
always makes me chuckle on the inside. First and foremost, what in the blue hell
is English-English? Is that someone born in the middle of England or something?
I mean I know that there have been different guys playing Bond from different
countries, that serve under her Majesty and the great country of England. I
could see if Idris was from like Scotland and Moore wanted the role to stay in
that of an actual Brit, but alas, Idris is a Brit through and through. And
everyone simply loves him in everything that he has done, well there was that
whole noise about him being in Thor, but that was quickly shut down. None the
less, I love Daniel Craig as Bond; he actually saved the franchise in my eyes. I
was really worried when he said he would be stepping down as Bond, those are big
shoes to fill, but with Idris Elba being considered, that would definitely keep
the series alive in my eyes.
Of course since then
Roger Moore has backed tracked from the comments and there are tons of
supporters of his, per the usual, in saying that he has a point. I also
checked out those message boards and people are saying keep Bond white, and why
do we always want to turn a character black. I even saw a couple of people
suggest black roles that white people should play, well do I need to you remind
of your of your latest attempt at that guys:
Like there's zero
shade on my part towards white actors or anything of the sort, I just want all
of the noise to pipe down and give the man a chance, after all, if it doesn't
work out, then you know you'll just reboot the series like you do with every
series that flops and you want to keep alive. At the end of the day, I see that
there is far more support for Idris playing Bond then there is for him not
playing. As a matter of fact, the only places you hear those rumblings are on
message boards where people can hide their faces and not actually have to voice
their angers publicly. Personally all of the hoopla behind the scenes, under the
rocks does not matter to me, it's the people voicing their support publicly that
matters to me. And for some reason, this role just feels right for him, he was
made to play this role.
What do you think
about Idris Elba replacing Daniel Craig as the next Bond? Do you think he can
pull it off or do you think he needs a bit more to play the role? Leave it in
the comments below.
Until next time
guys.
